Assumption Cathedral: Bang Rak's Catholic Landmark
From a modest early-1800s church to a 32-metre Italian Renaissance-influenced rebuild, Assumption Cathedral has been restored once and is still an active parish today.

Set back from Oriental Avenue, on what is also known as Soi Charoen Krung 40, Assumption Cathedral is the principal Catholic cathedral serving the Bangkok area. It is a working parish first, and a heritage landmark second — a distinction worth keeping in mind before treating it purely as a photo stop.
From a modest 19th-century church
According to the Bang Rak District Office's own account, the original church on this site dates to around 1809 — a modest structure serving Bangkok's Catholic community well before the district took its present shape.
Rebuilt in the early 20th century
The building was substantially rebuilt into its present form around 1909–1910, in an Italian Renaissance-influenced style, reaching roughly 32 metres in height — the cathedral most visitors see today.

A later restoration
The cathedral underwent restoration between 1983 and 1989, work that maintained the building for continued use as an active place of worship rather than converting it into a static monument.
